Watch: Speaking up for West Derby pensioners in Parliament
Millions of people are struggling in the current cost of living crisis, but pensioners are among the worst affected. Almost one-fifth of pensioners are living in poverty under this Government, including many here in our West Derby constituency. Today I questioned the Government Minister at Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) Questions in the House of Commons.
I asked the Minister if the abandonment of the triple-lock, a real-terms cut to their state pension (already one of the lowest in Europe) of around £500, bills rising by over £1000 and food costs spiralling, would make the Secretary of State acknowledge that recent measures from the Chancellor will not stop many pensioners in West Derby being plunged into poverty.
You can view a video clip of me asking this question in Parliament below:
You will note from my response to the minister that I am not impressed with the tired and formulaic response from Government on such vital issues.
I will continue to work hard for all pensioners in West Derby and indeed all constituents who are suffering in these challenging times for so many. If you are struggling, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
