Newcastle fans in overcrowding at Hillsborough, 34 years after disaster

Ian Byrne MP being interviewed by ITV News

Newcastle fans caught in overcrowding at Hillsborough Stadium at the weekend, during a Newcastle United FA Cup third-round tie against Sheffield Wednesday, say the conditions were unsafe.

I told ITV News this week that It was chilling to see photos and video clips emerge on social media of the situation as it unfolded last Saturday.

I never thought we would be seeing images such as these again, 34 years on from Hillsborough. It brought back awful memories and I'm sure thousands of people who were at Hillsborough that day in 1989 felt exactly the same.

The FA needs to listen this time. Obviously Liverpool fans had a bad experience with the FA in 1989 and I sincerely hope the FA has learned its lesson and will listen to the Newcastle fans this time.
