Solidarity with all CWU members

Communication Workers Union (CWU) members at BT voted yesterday for the company’s first national strike in 35 years.

The action by BT engineers, call centre and shop staff represent most of BT’s 58,000-strong frontline workforce. In April, BT gave its workers a £1500 pay rise and the CWU is pushing for a 10% rise as inflation hits a 40-year high of 9.1%.

BT’s chief executive Philip Jansen received a 32% pay rise to £3.5m due to bonuses and share awards and says the company can’t afford to improve the staff pay offer. BT made almost £2bn in profits for the year to the end of March.

The CWU is also balloting 115,000 postal workers at Royal Mail about proposed strike action, with the result due on 19 July.
