Children lead demand for food at Hunger March' in Liverpool
Chanting children led the charge at a Hunger March through the streets of Liverpool today as hundreds of people rallied for the right to food.
The Right to Food campaign, led by West Derby MP Ian Byrne, calls for access to food to be made a legal right for all. It comes as food prices continue to soar, with many household essentials such as baby formula being kept under lock and key on supermarket shelves.
Nine million adults (17% of all households) experienced food insecurity in June 2023, with 3m of these reporting not eating all day, according to The Food Foundation. Some 23.4% of households with children reported experiencing food insecurity, compared with 14.8% of households without children.
The rally began on the steps of St George's Hall at noon today with a short play by Writing on the Wall about activist George Garrett, who championed the rights of unemployed people in the 1920s and led Liverpool in the National Hunger March to London in 1922.
Right To Food campaigners then embarked on their own hunger march to St Luke's Bombed Out Church and on to a rally at the Casa bar on Hope Street.
